President's MessageDecember 13, 2016, 8:51 am by Brent Hill

ODFSA President’s Message

Dear Colleagues,

It is with great enthusiasm that I accept the position of ODFSA President for 2016-2017.

The mandate of the ODFSA is to promote funeral excellence through a network of funeral care professionals. The Ottawa District Funeral Service Association works closely with the Bereavement Authority of Ontario to help ensure that the high standards of funeral services, for the people of Ontario, are met.

You will notice that our mandate mentions “a network of funeral care professionals”. This verbiage was specifically chosen because we want the ODFSA to be an inclusive organization, rather than an exclusive one. All funeral care professionals will be invited to join and participate in the ODFSA whether you are: family owned or corporate; a funeral home, a cemetery, a transfer service or a supplier.

Although many similar associations have disappeared from the landscape and we ourselves are also struggling to stay relevant, we have the opportunity to reinvent ourselves and become a strong and viable association.

Our Board of Management would encourage all funeral care professionals to subscribe or renew their memberships in the ODFSA for 2017 and add your voice to our common chorus.  It is only with a common voice that we can lobby stakeholders in order to bring about positive change within our industry.  One of the Board of Management’s main goals over the next term(s) of office is to renegotiate the City of Ottawa Social Service Pricing Structure. This can only be accomplished by a large and united ODFSA.

Our Board of Management is also committed to increasing our online presence, implementing effective succession planning within the executive, and increased networking / co-operation between member through the following meeting schedule:

·         Social Gathering - February 2016

·         Educational Meeting - May 2016

·         Social Gathering - August 2016

·         Educational / AGM - November 2016

*Dates, Times and Locations of the above meetings will be made available on the ODFSA Website and Facebook Page once they are confirmed.*

          Transforming The Decomposed

A innovative look into handling cases of decomposition in the preparation room.  In order to effectively handle such cases we must understand the process of human decomposition.   We take a look at decomposition through the eyes of Dr. Bill Bass founder of Tennessee’s infamous “Body farm”.   Attendees will witness a human body go through the complete physical changes after death. Learn how to present cases for open casket viewing that are in severe decay.  We will discuss actual cases from all four stages of decomposition and effective techniques that were used to present an open casket viewing for the families.  Cases with severe skin slippage to trauma cases with decomp.  A look at a young women killed in the Haitian earthquake found after three weeks and the process used to restore her appearance so family may view one last time. Finally we will look into a case with severe “tissue gas” and the process of effectively overcoming.  View video of a facial resection illustrating the techniques used to restore the facial features for trauma and decompositional cases. Attendees will leave this seminar with a new outlook on difficult cases involving decomposition.
